Libby Leissner has a time machine. How, when, or where she got it? Nobody knows. But it must be so, for it would be the only explanation, as when Libby plugs in her guitar, and the words leave her lips, she’s plugged in to an era gone by. An era where the craft of songwriting meant not only connecting with an audience, but connecting deeply within yourself in the process.
When Libby was a young girl, she noticed something that had always seemed like a fancy piece of furniture in her parents lounge room - her father’s guitar. This sent her spiralling into the world of some of her greatest influences — Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Fleetwood Mac, Shania Twain and Joni Mitchell. Libby’s growing obsession with music lead her down a path that she’s never turned back on — a path of being able to connect with and understand people, and herself.
2014 was the first year that Libby shared any original music with the world. It was this year, at age 15, that Libby debuted her original song “Song For Jane”, which was played to an auditorium of over 1400 people. Like one of her biggest influences, Stevie Nicks (though unbeknownst to Libby at the time), had done 14 years prior, Libby wrote this song for Jane Goodall, who thanked her and praised her songwriting ability. In that same year, Libby was performing at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne, for the “Time to Shine” Festival, which aired on national television, under Musical Director Greg Mills (Young Talent Time).
Libby’s experience spans well beyond songwriting, with a countless number of live performances, and hours of recording time under her belt, primarily as a session vocalist, lending her vocal stylings to companies such as Uniqlo, Nissan, Asics, Toyota, Honda, Vivo, Asahi and Huawei, for their promotional and advertising material. 2023 will see Libby continue to grow as an artist, musician and songwriter, and the long hours and hard work she’s put into recording and producing her original songs will see her release music in the latter half of the year.
An age-old soul in the body of a 23-year-old woman who’s experienced love, heartbreak, loss and pain that the average person wouldn’t; when Libby picks up her guitar and lets her honest, soulful, voice echo out across a room, you’d forget that she’s only been writing original music for less than a decade. When she sings, it’s as if she’s opening a window into her soul; and those lucky enough to be in earshot, get to marvel at a sound, at her songs and at a performance that seems to have journeyed across space and time, all for you. She has an incredible natural talent for inevitable melody, captured in her songs that you’ve never heard before, but could have sworn have been around since the dawn of time. One thing is for certain, they’ll be talking about Libby Leissner long after we’re gone.
